Everything Is a Knife is the first senior publication for the Division of Multi-disciplinary Design at the University of Utah. I served as editor-in-chief, shaping the publication’s visual strategy and leading the design process from concept to print. Working closely with the photography editor, I coordinated content collection, layout, and image curation to ensure the diversity of student work was represented with clarity and care. Alongside design, I also managed scheduling, communication, and production timelines throughout my last semester of school.
Together, we approached the book as both a reflection of our cohort and a tool for professional visibility. This dual purpose informed our visual strategy. Most notably, the use of square image crops that collage student work across the publication. These cropped fragments are directly tied to their corresponding spreads, functioning as both a visual table of contents and a collective portrait. The result is a layout that celebrates the collaborative, overlapping nature of our studio environment.
This project taught me how to guide a collective creative effort—balancing structure with individual voice, and aesthetics with utility. The publication identity then extended into print and digital assets for our senior exhibition, creating a unified experience that celebrated both the physicality of the book and the energy of the graduating class. It was one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve led, rooted in shared authorship and deep respect for the work of those around me.
